HISTORY
Probably conceived somewhere in the shadier districts of Ba Sing Se, Tarben’s mother was never around. After a few years in a run-down home for orphaned bending children founded by some sick old lady with a love for her multitudes of pet rat-dogs, he just left. The other children at the bending orphanage either starved or followed the same path, he heard later on. Not that it mattered to him.
For the next several years, he raised himself. Money didn’t come easily, and his lazy side prevented him from even attempting to get a job. He spent his days grabbing milk off of porches, sneaking a roll or two from the baker, or even (if he was feeling particularly daring) charming his way into a meal or two courtesy of the local baker’s daughter or breaking into an empty home.
Earthbending has helped him as well, and has assisted him in avoiding arrest many times. Unfortunately that can’t always happen. He’s still landed himself in prison a few times, but through some method or another manages to get out. Prisons for petty thieves have low security.
He spends his days thieving and building up his hoard of objects… kind of like a packrat. His home is in the rafters of an old warehouse, and it’s full of junk that he might never need. Tissue boxes, papers, and odds and ends galore.
PERSONALITY
Ever the charmer, Tarben has no trouble getting people to like him… especially females. Despite this outward charm and warmth, inside he’s about as caring as a dead bird. He didn’t give a damn when he heard that the other orphanage children were hurt, swiped food from the younger urchins without batting an eyelash, and when charm isn’t necessary he drops the act. He has a hidden resentment for the more wealthy, and a healthy contempt for the less wealthy. He does nothing unless he has something to gain from it, and despite being such a good actor there are times his arrogance shines through. He cares for no one.
Despite his low status he has no desire of getting any higher. Something about the life of an urchin appeals to him. He has no boundaries, no goals, and certainly no limitations. He’s like an overfed rat, with nothing to strive for other than his next meal.
